Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. I offer secure virtual therapy across Ontario. Many clients appreciate the flexibility of meeting from home, especially during busy seasons like pregnancy, early motherhood, or demanding work schedules. Virtual sessions are just as intentional, supportive, and effective as in-person sessions.

Yes. In-person sessions are available in Burlington, Ontario. My office is a calm, private space designed to help you feel grounded and comfortable. Because the space is shared, in-person appointments are booked based on room availability.

I primarily support women navigating anxiety, overwhelm, life transitions, pregnancy or postpartum challenges, and the pressures of balancing career, motherhood, and everyday responsibilities. Whether you’re stepping into a new chapter or trying to feel more like yourself again, therapy can give you a steady space to explore what you need.

My work focuses on:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress and overwhelm
  • Life transitions like postpartum, parenting shifts, career changes, or grief
  • Identity, relational, and emotional shifts that can arise during perimenopause and menopause
  • Postpartum depression
  • Women’s issues
  • Work-life balance

If your experience falls outside these areas, you’re still welcome to reach out — we’ll look together at whether my approach is a good fit for your needs.

My approach is flexible and depends on what feels most helpful for you. My approach is flexible and integrative This allows our work together to be tailored to your needs and how you naturally process emotions and experiences. I draw from:

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Narrative Therapy
• Person-centered therapy
• Mindfulness practices
• Self-compassion work

Together, we’ll explore the patterns shaping your experiences and find practical ways to help you feel more grounded and supported in daily life.

Sessions are 50 minutes. This gives us enough time to settle in, explore what’s been coming up for you, and end in a grounded place.

Sessions are $165. Many extended health plans offer coverage for Registered Psychotherapists. You can check with your provider to see what is included in your plan.

You can book a free 15-minute consultation or request a therapy session through the website. During your consultation, you can ask questions, share what you’re looking for, and get a feel for whether we’re the right fit.

A consultation is a short phone call where we talk about what you’re hoping to work on and what you need in a therapist. I’ll share more about how I work, and you can ask anything that helps you make a comfortable and informed decision.

Your appointment time is reserved just for you. Late cancellations or missed sessions may prevent another client from receiving support. I require at least 24 hours’ notice for any cancellations or changes. If you do not provide 24 hours’ notice, you will still be charged the full session fee of $165. To cancel or reschedule, please email me directly at psychotherapybyjm@gmail.com. If you miss your appointment, the full session fee of $165 will apply. If you have any concerns about this policy, please discuss them with me.

That’s completely okay. Many clients I work with are coming to therapy for the first time. I’ll guide you through the process gently and clearly. You don’t need to show up with the “right” words or a perfect explanation of what you’re feeling — we’ll figure things out together.

The relationship between therapist and client is one of the most important parts of the work. During our first session or consultation call, you’ll get a sense of whether my approach, personality, and pace feel supportive to you. I want you to feel safe, respected, and understood — we’ll make sure it feels right from the start.

Sometimes, yes — but only if it feels helpful for you. Homework may include journaling, grounding techniques, self-compassion practices, or tools to use during stressful moments. If you prefer not to have homework, we can focus fully on in-session work. Therapy will always move at your pace.

Many clients say they feel more grounded, calmer, and better able to understand what’s been weighing on them. Over time, you may notice more confidence, clearer boundaries, steadier coping skills, and a deeper sense of connection to your own values and strengths. Everyone’s journey looks different; what matters most is that the work feels meaningful and supportive for you.

Yes. Perinatal mental health is one of my key focus areas. I support women experiencing anxiety during pregnancy, postpartum depression, intrusive thoughts, overwhelm, or identity shifts in early motherhood. You don’t have to navigate these changes alone.

Absolutely. You don’t need a diagnosis or a clear reason to begin therapy. Many women come in simply because something feels off, heavy, or harder than usual. Therapy can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and support you in feeling more grounded and connected.

Many insurance plans cover psychotherapy services. I encourage you to check your benefits to see if Registered Psychotherapist services are included. After each session, I provide a receipt that you can submit directly for reimbursement.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes. This gives us enough time to explore what you’re working through while allowing a gentle pace that helps you integrate insights and tools along the way.

I offer women-centred therapy that honours your lived experience, identity, and the roles you carry. Whether you’re navigating motherhood, career changes, relationships, or personal growth, therapy becomes a space that prioritizes your emotional well-being and helps you feel supported, understood, and empowered.

You don’t need to prepare anything. Some clients bring notes, questions, or reflections, but it’s not required. Showing up as you are is more than enough.

All information discussed in therapy sessions will be kept confidential, unless you give me written permission to share such information, with some exceptions as outlined below.

I may be required by law to report suspected abuse, for example regarding children, elders, or disabled adults.

I may also be required to disclose information if compelled by a lawyer’s undertaking in the context of a civil case, a court order, or a subpoena.

If I believe you may harm yourself or others, I may need to take steps to ensure your safety or the safety of others.

If you are concerned about confidentiality in any situation, please bring it to my attention.

Women-centred therapy acknowledges the unique experiences, roles, pressures, and identities that women carry. It recognizes how motherhood, career expectations, relationships, and emotional labour shape your well-being. My approach offers a supportive, non-judgmental space where your lived experiences guide our work together.

Absolutely. Parenting can bring emotional overload, exhaustion, and constant decision-making. Together, we explore your stress triggers, coping patterns, and the expectations you hold for yourself. We’ll also work on strategies that help you regulate your nervous system and create space for rest, connection, and self-compassion.

Narrative Therapy helps you understand the stories you’ve formed about yourself and your life. Sometimes these stories come from past experiences, societal expectations, or pressures you didn’t choose. In therapy, we gently untangle these narratives so you can rewrite them in a way that feels more empowering, compassionate, and aligned with who you are now.

CBT helps you examine patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. I use CBT tools when it’s helpful for building awareness, reducing anxiety, or shifting unhelpful thinking patterns. We use these tools in a way that feels supportive, not overwhelming.

Yes. Mindfulness and self-compassion practices are integrated throughout my work, especially when supporting clients through anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or difficult transitions. These practices offer a gentle way to reconnect with your body, regulate your nervous system, and build resilience over time.

Yes. We work on practical tools for calming your nervous system, challenging anxious thinking, and creating more space between your emotions and your reactions. These strategies are tailored to your lifestyle so they feel realistic and supportive, not stressful or rigid.

That’s more common than people think. Every therapist is different, and the relationship itself plays a significant role. My approach is warm, collaborative, and paced according to your comfort. We start slowly, focus on what feels supportive for you, and build trust over time.

It’s completely normal to feel unsure. You can come as you are. There’s no right or wrong way to begin therapy. Simply showing up is the first step, and we move at a pace that feels steady and manageable for you.
